1. Barra
Barra is one of Salvador’s most touristic and lively neighborhoods. In the opinion of many travelers — it’s one of the best areas to stay, especially if you want to enjoy the beach near your hotel and get around on foot.
The area is home to two of the most popular beaches in the city: Porto da Barra and Farol da Barra, and also features famous landmarks like the Barra Lighthouse and the forts of Santa Maria and São Diogo.
The neighborhood also offers great infrastructure: shopping centers, stores, cafés, bars, restaurants, nightlife, parks, and public transport to other parts of the city.
It’s generally considered one of the safest areas in Salvador, with good police presence and constant movement.
The beachfront promenade is one of the favorite places to take a relaxing walk. You’ll find people jogging, biking, rollerblading, or just sitting by the sea.
From Barra, you can reach Salvador’s main attractions like the Historic Center and Rio Vermelho in about 15 to 25 minutes by car or app-based transport.
Buses and the new metro system also offer affordable connections, but for comfort and safety, Uber is usually the best option for visitors.

2. Pelourinho and the Historic Center
Pelourinho is one of the most famous areas in Salvador. It’s right in the Historic Center, and staying here means you’ll be close to many tourist attractions.
You can visit São Francisco Church, the Afro-Brazilian Museum, the Elevador Lacerda, the Catedral Basílica, and several other churches, squares, and museums — all within walking distance.
The area is full of restaurants, shops, bars, and cultural events, and it’s easy to get to other parts of the city from here.
It’s also convenient for transportation: you’ll be near the terminal for boats to Itaparica and Morro de São Paulo, and the final stop for buses coming from the airport.

That said, safety is something to keep in mind. During the day, the main streets are usually fine — busy and with police presence. At night, the area becomes quieter, and it’s better to use Uber and avoid empty or poorly lit streets.

Although it’s not by the beach, it’s easy to get from Pelourinho to Salvador’s main seaside areas. The closest one, Porto da Barra, is about 6.5 km away and can be reached by car, taxi, or ride app like Uber in around 20 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic.
Using Uber is usually the most practical and safest option, especially if you’re heading out in the evening or don’t want to deal with local buses.

3. Rio Vermelho

The neighborhood has beach access, including Buracão Beach, the best for swimming, and also Praia da Paciência, Praia do Rio Vermelho, and Praia de Amaralina. The waterfront is good for walking or biking, with several kiosks and bars along the way.
There are also interesting cultural spots, such as Casa do Rio Vermelho, the former home of Brazilian writer Jorge Amado, and Casa de Iemanjá, a small seaside temple.
The neighborhood offers a good mix of accommodations, including beachfront hotels and smaller guesthouses tucked away on quieter streets, with options for different styles and budgets.
From Rio Vermelho, it takes around 15 to 25 minutes by car or Uber to get to the Historic Center or Barra. The neighborhood is well-connected by public transport, but for most travelers, app-based rides are the most convenient and safe option — especially at night.
Rio Vermelho is a area that offers a more local experience, especially for those who enjoy music, food, and lively evenings. Just keep in mind that, depending on where you stay, it can get noisy at night.

These neighborhoods are also conveniently close to Salvador’s International Airport, just 7 to 9 km away, making them ideal for travelers who want to get straight to the beach.
In contrast, Salvador’s Historic Center (Pelourinho) is around 25 to 27 km away, and reaching it can take 40 to 60 minutes by Uber or taxi, especially during high season or rush hour. Prices typically range from R$ 35 to R$ 60 per ride.
Accommodations in this area are mainly beachfront hotels and resorts, with a few guesthouses and short-term rental apartments. It’s one of the only areas in Salvador where you can stay literally on the sand, which is a huge plus for beach lovers.
While you won’t find as many cultural attractions nearby, the region is perfect if your goal is to rest, swim, and enjoy the coastline.
That said, due to the distance from the city center, it’s a better fit for those who are either visiting Salvador for the second time or plan to explore the tourist spots on select days only.
It’s not ideal for travelers who want to visit the Pelourinho or the markets downtown every day.
One important consideration is safety. Because Itapuã and Stella Maris are a bit removed from the more populated urban zones, it’s recommended to take extra care at night, especially in less busy streets.
Still, during the day, these areas are lively and full of beachgoers, particularly in summer and during Carnival.

Corredor da Vitória is the most upscale neighborhood in Salvador, home to the city’s most expensive real estate.
Nestled between Barra and the Historic Center, it offers a prime central location that makes getting around easy—whether you’re heading to Pelourinho, the Farol da Barra, or the Elevador Lacerda.
From here, you can reach Porto da Barra Beach in about 5 to 10 minutes by car (approximately 2 km), and the Pelourinho/Historic Center in around 10 to 15 minutes (roughly 3.5 km, depending on traffic).
This elegant area is known for its luxurious residential buildings perched atop the cliffs, many with sweeping views of the Bay of All Saints.
Despite its quiet atmosphere, Corredor da Vitória has great infrastructure, including excellent restaurants, cultural institutions, and quick access to shopping areas.
It’s an ideal choice for travelers seeking a more refined, peaceful stay while still being close to the main attractions.
While there aren’t many hotels in the neighborhood, the ones that exist are some of the best in the city—including five-star properties and boutique hotels that offer top-tier comfort and service.
During Carnival, the area is also popular thanks to its proximity to the Barra-Ondina circuit, although it remains quieter than nearby Barra.
One thing to note: the ocean here is not suitable for swimming—the rocky coastline and strong currents make it dangerous. Still, the sea views are among the best in Salvador and are a major highlight of staying in the area.
While it is technically walkable to some parts of Barra (a 25–30 minute walk to Farol da Barra, for example), the best way to get around is by Uber or taxi, especially considering Salvador’s heat, hills, and the occasional safety concerns in less busy areas.
The only real downside is the cost. Accommodation here tends to be more expensive. But if you’re looking for comfort, safety, and sophistication, Corredor da Vitória is worth every penny.

Barra, one of the most visited areas by tourists, has a strong security presence around the Farol da Barra lighthouse and beachfront promenade. It’s a busy neighborhood, which helps enhance the feeling of safety—especially during the day and weekends.
Rio Vermelho is considered safe in its central parts, especially near the restaurants and bars that keep the area lively at night. However, as in any city, it’s wise to avoid walking on quieter side streets late at night.
Itapuã and Stella Maris, located farther from the city center, are also considered safe neighborhoods. Both areas offer a calmer environment, but they tend to be quiet and less populated at night. While generally safe, extra caution is recommended after dark due to the lower movement of people.
As for Pelourinho and the Historic Center, they are best visited during daylight hours. The area has police patrols around the main landmarks, but it quiets down significantly at night, which can increase safety concerns. If staying here, avoid empty streets and don’t display valuables.

If you’re planning to visit Salvador during Carnival, the best areas to stay are definitely Barra and Ondina. These neighborhoods are right along the famous Barra-Ondina circuit, a 4-kilometer route where the biggest Carnival parades and blocos take place.
For travelers who love excitement, music, and lively crowds, staying in these areas puts you at the heart of the action.

Although these are not exactly urban beaches, both areas offer decent infrastructure for a full beach day.
Stella Maris is even considered one of the cleanest beaches in Salvador, with stronger waves ideal for surfing and bodyboarding.
Itapuã, on the other hand, has gentler waves, palm trees, and natural pools that form among the rocks at low tide—ideal for families or travelers who enjoy a more scenic, laid-back vibe.
Keep in mind that these areas are safe and peaceful, but they get quiet at night, so they’re better suited for those seeking rest rather than nightlife.
If being close to the beach is important to you but you also want to be more central, consider Barra, Ondina, and Rio Vermelho.

Where to Stay in Salvador for Nightlife
If you’re more into nightlife, Rio Vermelho is one of the best places to stay in Salvador. Though primarily residential, the neighborhood is full of bars, live music venues, and excellent restaurants, making it a top choice for those looking to enjoy Salvador after dark.
Rio Vermelho is also considered one of the safest areas in the city, which is another bonus for travelers.
